Aspartame is a non-sugar sweetener used in diet drinks, tablets and packets. A typical 1 g aspartame packet lists dextrose with maltodextrin first, then aspartame and acesulfame potassium. The label shows 1 g of carbohydrate and 0 kcal. US rules allow a zero-calorie label for any serving under 5 kcal, so a packet carries up to about 4 kcal.

In one study, tasting sweet drinks made with sugar, aspartame or saccharin did not trigger an early insulin release, while chewing real food did. That is early evidence from a single study. Whether sweeteners raise insulin over time is still unresolved and may vary between people. So aspartame stays grey for blood sugar and for autophagy, as every non-caloric sweet taste does on this site's four-goal framework.

For weight loss, aspartame is grey on the site's rule for sweet tastes. Some people find that sweet tastes make them hungrier, though the research on this is mixed. WHO also advises against non-sugar sweeteners for weight control, as a conditional recommendation. Gut rest is grey because packets bring dextrose and maltodextrin for your gut to digest.

In 2023 the WHO cancer agency, IARC, classed aspartame as possibly carcinogenic to humans (Group 2B), based on limited evidence. At the same time, the joint FAO/WHO expert committee on food additives kept the acceptable daily intake at 40 mg per kg of body weight. WHO's worked example uses a can of diet soft drink with 200 or 300 mg of aspartame. At that dose, a 70 kg adult would need more than 9 to 14 cans a day to pass the limit. EU labels must say that aspartame is a source of phenylalanine, which matters for anyone with phenylketonuria (PKU).

Watch out

If you have phenylketonuria (PKU), check labels for aspartame, which is a source of phenylalanine. Packets also carry about 1 g of dextrose each.

Questions people ask

Can I drink diet soda while intermittent fasting?

Diet soda sweetened with aspartame has close to 0 kcal and no sugar. Like the sweetener itself, it is a grey area for autophagy and blood sugar. For a strict fast, plain water, black coffee or plain tea are the safer choices.

Does sweetened coffee break a fast?

Coffee sweetened with sugar breaks a fast for blood sugar, autophagy and gut rest, and a teaspoon of sugar is about 16 kcal. Coffee with an aspartame packet adds at most about 4 kcal, but sits in the grey area for every goal.
